Things I Love Thursday – blog edition! In which I share some of my favorite blogs with you, and you admire my awesome taste and superb knowledge of the internet. Yeah.
CrazySexyLife.com. Besides being one of my favorite sites in terms of design, they always seem to be adding people I really like as guest bloggers, like Sera Beak and Wayne Pacelle (the latter of which I have seen speak in person, and yes he really IS that unbelievably cute).
Revolutionary Giggles. Because I know I’m in love with a blog when a post starts with the sentence “Disappointment in American culture is running me over like a damn garbage truck on fire.”
Library Riot. People seem to think that library folks are quiet and meek and we sit around and read all day. Bitch, please, why the hell would the county pay me to read books all day? The fact is that, as much as I hate to admit it, librarianship is a real profession and your local library is on the front lines of every battle from free speech and censorship to copyright and fair use and even privacy and your personal information. Want a library blog written by someone who actually works in a library with the public all day (instead of in an administration office)? The check out Chris’ blog.
Anomalist. UFOs, bigfoot, ghosts, shadow people, demons, ESP, etc. I don’t even know if this is really a blog so much as just a collection of weird news, but it is awesome. Y’know when I post really strange stuff on Facebook and you wonder, wtf? It probably came from this site.
BTW, do I understand correctly that some of you still aren’t following Sockington on Twitter? WTF? Why do you even have internet access then?
The Gluten Free Vegan by Susan O’Brien. Gluten and I have not been getting along lately. When you’re already vegan, and then you cut out the most popular grain in the country, you need a little help figuring out what you *can* eat.
Babycakes by Erin McKenna. Have I posted about this one already? This is another one that I checked out from the library but I DEFINITELY need to buy. It’s all vegan, all desserts, all gluten free, and mostly low on sugar. My completely awesome husband, who is not vegan himself but has learned to cook vegan food like a pro, made a cake out of this cookbook for my birthday and it was fantastic! Even if you aren’t vegan, if you’re gluten free or just want to make desserts with less sugar, you’ll love this book.
The Asian Vegan Kitchen by Hema Parekh. I’m going to let you in on a little secret. If you are vegan or you eat gluten-free, you need to learn the ins and outs of your local Asian grocery store. You’ll find a ton of new foods, lots of gluten free noodles, and rice flour WAY cheaper than at your health food store. Luckily, I live in an area with a huge Korean and Vietnamese population, so we have tons of awesome Asian grocery stores. Vietnamese recipes are easy to veganise if you leave off the fish sauce!
Gorillas! So YAY to the authorities who rescued a baby gorilla from an animal trafficker. You DO NOT shove a baby gorilla (or any other creature) into a bag and leave it there for six hours. Jerk.
Food! The worst thing about the Standard American Diet is that we tend to get stuck in a rut, eating the same things all the time. VARIETY is the key to a healthy diet, especially for us vegetarians. Check out this list of Great Foods You Aren’t Eating (and notice, most of the list is vegan).
Sorry I haven’t had much time to post lately! Don’t worry, I still have lots of fun stuff planned. Atlanta area folks – don’t forget about the Garden Party on April 18!
Going green by eating green! Want to reduce your carbon footprint? Many people don’t realize the environmental impact of what you eat. One of the reasons I’m vegan is because it is a really easy way to create less carbon and use less water.
“The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery. There comes a leap in conciousness, call it intuition or what you will, and the solution comes to you and you don’t know how or why.” -Albert Einstein
The Red Book by Sera Beak! More on this later, I’m still devouring it! Thanks to Gala Darling for recommending it! Are you a human being? Then you should probably read it!
Baby goats! Mountain Farm in North Carolina is having BABY GOAT DAY on April 11! I wish I could go! They have some other cool events coming up this summer, I hope I can visit sometime!
R. Thomas Deluxe Grill! Everyone can eat here! Vegetarians, vegans, raw foodists, gluten free folks, and even plain old omnivores. I’m hoping to attend a Raw Food meet up on Sunday afternoon, anyone else going to be there?
Hugh Jackman! I think Wolverine is going to be great!
Vegans! One of the cool things about veganism is that people go vegan for lots of different reasons. Here is an article about baby boomers going vegan for health reasons. Did you know that only animal products contain cholesterol? That means a vegan diet has zero cholesterol!
Partys! Want to meet cool green people? In addition to Demeter’s Garden Party, I’ve got a guest post up at Green in Gwinnett Area that will tell you about all sorts of other green events going on this spring!
Earth Hour! Are you turning out the lights for Earth Hour, this Saturday at 8:30 PM? Have anything cool planned?
Communes! I’ve always rather liked the idea of living in a hippie commune. TreeHugger has some suggestions for turning suburban neighborhoods into communes where people can pool resources and work together.
I am so freakin’ excited to tell you about our first event, hosted by DemetersGarden.com and TheModernista.com! I’ve been working on this idea for a little while, and it’s finally here!
VEGETARIAN/VEGAN POTLUCK!
Saturday, April 18 2009 1:30-4:30 PM
Bunten Road Park, Duluth GA
Vegetarians, vegans, veggie-curious, and foodies are all welcome! We would love if you brought a dish to pass, just make sure to label it as vegetarian or vegan so those of us who can’t digest milk know! Can’t cook to save your life? We’ll need beverages and some eco-friendly utensils too! Send me an email at mia@demetersgarden.com to RSVP so I know how many to expect. I’ve rented a pavilion that holds about 35-40 people, but there is a whole park to explore (and a playground right next to the pavilion for the wee ones).
So excited! Maybe I’ll make some vegan pound cake!
Gala Darling! I love love LOVE her post yesterday, Jealousy is the Killer of GIRL LOVE! Girls, we know we are all guilty of hating on other girls because we’re jealous. What do you do to let go of that jealousy?
Cryptids! This cool MonsterPedia from the folks at Monster Quest will help you keep your sasquatch straight from your swamp beast!
Ghost movies! I’m very excited about seeing A Haunting in Connecticut next week, and I think they have done some cool things to promote the movie, including using Twitter and a web feature that helps you find haunted sites near you!
Russia! Why? They are going to ban hunting young seals! Here is the story from Planetsave. Be warned, the picture is a wee bit disturbing.
These adorable dolls, they are organic, they help kids learn about the environment, and they are fairies!
Goats! Okay, so you already knew that! Check out these goats that can graze your land as an eco-friendly landscaping alternative.
Seals! Did you know that March 15th is the International Day of Action Against Seal Hunting? Planetsave suggests ways to celebrate and save seals!
Pagans! If anyone appreciates Mother Nature, it’s Pagans! This week, Witchvox has a couple of great Earth-loving posts. Check out Our Carbon Footprint and Why Hug a Tree!
Food! I love to eat, but I love to be green. Treehugger gives us Seven Ways to Eat Green. Guess what, going vegan is on the list!
