Being Thankful at Thanksgiving

Whether you’re looking forward to a big Thanksgiving feast, or dreading Aunt Edna’s questions about your love life, take some time to say “Thanks” to the people that make your life easier. Not your family, although I’m sure they are great too. No, I’m talking, of course, about people in the service industry. You know, the babysitter who is always available at short notice? Or how about the guy at the bookstore that always helps you special order things? I’ve worked in customer service for the better part of ten years. This time of year, going into the holiday season, can be pretty thankless. Especially in retail, people are stressed out and they take out their frustrations on the poor helpless supermarket checkout lady. And, no matter how rude people get, that checkout lady has to be nice to them, it’s her job.

So this time of year is a great time to say thanks. If there is a particular employee who is always helpful, let their manager know. In some stores, customer comments go into staff reviews. This time of year, with the most stressful season ahead, take the time to give a big “Thank you” to the people who help you all year.
